
Dr. Leonard B. Smith, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive
Dr. Smith, D.D.S., M.Sc., F.R.C.D.(C), F.A.A.P., F.I.C.D., Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, is Clinical Assistant Professor, Dept of Pediatrics in the Faculty of Medicine, the University of Calgary. In addition to his many professional affiliations and publication in the field, Dr. Smith has operated a large and accomplished practice in pediatric dentistry for several decades, and it is in his practitioner’s role that Dr. Smith has developed the sense of urgency regarding Early Childhood Caries that led to the formation of the Foundation. Dr. Smith is Chairman of the Non-Hospital Surgical Facilities Committee for the Alberta Dental Association and College, and Past President of both the Academy of Dentistry for the Handicapped and the Alberta Society of Pediatric Dentists. He is the recipient of the Integrity Award from the Rotary Club of Calgary.
Dr. Paul S. Casamassimo
Dr. Casamassimo is professor of pediatric dentistry at Ohio State University and chief of dentistry at Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. He received his dental training at Georgetown University School of Dentistry and his specialty training in pediatric dentistry at the University of Iowa. His research interests are health policy, children with special health care needs, clinical outcomes, and oral health in chronically ill patients. Dr. Casamassimo is past president of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, and past Editor of the Journal of Pediatric Dentistry. Dr. Casamassimo is recipient of the Manuel M. Album Award from the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry for career dedication to the oral health of children with special needs.
Dr. Herb Emery
Dr. Herb Emery is the Svare Professor in Health Economics, jointly appointed to the Departments of Economics and Community Health Sciences at the University of Calgary. Dr. Emery has a PhD in Economics from the University of British Columbia and has been a member of the Department of Economics at the University of Calgary since 1993. His research is best described as contributing to the areas of health care finance and economic incentives. His published research has dealt with subjects that are relevant to the fields of health economics, labour economics, and to the literature on the rise and fall of social spending.
Dr. Clive Friedman
Dr. Friedman is Associate Clinical Professor of Dentistry at the University of Toronto and on faculty as well at the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Western Ontario. He is a graduate of the University of Witwaterand in South Africa and Louisiana State University in New Orleans, Past President of both the International Association for Disability and Oral Health (IADH) and the Academy of Dentistry for Persons with Disabilities (ADPD), a Fellow of the ADPD and Diplomate and Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. Dr. Friedman sits on the CDA Committee for Scientific and Clinical Affairs, as well as the Sub-Committee on Aging, and is a member of the Editorial Board of the British Journal of Disability and Oral Health.
Gordon J. Hoffman, Q.C.
Mr. Gordon Hoffman is a distinguished corporate, real estate and personal injury lawyer in Calgary, Alberta. In addition to a stellar career in law, Mr. Hoffman has dedicated himself to an immense variety of community, professional and cultural causes, including those in service of children, the disabled and the homeless. His efforts on behalf of others have spanned religious and ethnic boundaries, and have gained him over a dozen community service awards. Mr. Hoffman has authored or co-authored five novels.
Dr. Larry Katz
Dr. Katz is Professor and Director of the Sport Technology Research Centre, Faculty of Kinesiology at the University of Calgary. An award winning developer and producer of interactive multimedia applications, he is an Educational Psychologist interested in how people learn, and how to improve human performance through the use of technology. He worked with Own the Podium to develop the National Performance Database for the 2010 Winter Olympics, established the Centre for Video and Performance Analysis, and the Centre for Exergaming Research. He was a participant in Canada’s G7 Information Technology Showcases in Brussels, Halifax, and Johannesburg and has consulted with the Canadian Space Agency on their multimedia training and the International Telecommunications Union of the United Nations and the Canadian International Development Agency on providing multimedia technology in-services in developing countries.
Dr. Arthur J. Nowak
Dr. Arthur Nowak is a paediatric dentist of wide repute and accomplishment who is presently Executive Director of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. His past accomplishments include past president of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, consultant in Pediatric Dentistry to the ADA Commission on Dental Accreditation, chair of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, president of the Academy of Dentistry for the Handicapped, member, board of directors, American Society of Dentistry for Children, trustee, American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, consultant to four national advocacy organizations, consultant to the Surgeon General’s Office, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Dr. Nowak is the author of numerous articles, and contributor to several authoritative books on the subject of pediatric dentistry. Dr. Nowak is also recipient of the Distinguished Service Award and the Manuel M. Album Award from the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.
Dr. Jackie Sieppert
Dr. Sieppert is Dean of the Faculty of Social Work at the University of Calgary, receiving his degrees from the University of Calgary and Arizona State University. His research interests include community development with seniors, dynamics of successful collaboration, and digital storytelling. Dr. Sieppert’s professional experience includes social work practice experience in short-term adolescent care, probation, hospital and program planning settings. His primary research interests and activities focus on evaluation and accountability mechanisms in social policy and administration of human services. Dr. Sieppert has directed or co-directed numerous projects for government and non-profit organizations, and is also the author of a number of journal articles and book chapters. He has presented at numerous conferences nationally and internationally, and is also a co-author of a text called Practice Evaluation for the 21st Century, which focuses on the use of research to evaluate social work practice.
Dr. Wilfreda Thurston
Dr. Wilfreda (Billie) Thurston is the Director of the University of Calgary’s Institute for Gender Research. She has over 15 years of experience working in human services and 13 years in health research, with a BA in psychology and a MSc and PhD in health research and social epidemiology. She worked in family and children’s services, addictions, and was director of a shelter for women escaping abusive relationships. Her program of training and research includes development and evaluation of health promotion programs and health services; prevention of intimate violence (e.g., theoretical models and evaluation of community and health sector programs); public participation in health policy development (e.g., immigrant women’s participation in domestic violence health policy); and the interplay of the social determinants of health, particularly gender and culture.
The Honourable Judge Nancy Flatters
Nancy Flatters has an LL.B. (now J.D.) from Queen’s University and a LL.M. from Osgoode Hall Law School. Prior to her appointment to the Provincial Court of Alberta in 1996, she practiced law in Calgary, Alberta and from January 1996 to her appointment as a Q.C lawyer. She has taught as a sessional instructor at the University of Calgary and now teaches dispute resolution, mediation, settlement skills and mentoring to the judiciary and profession both locally and internationally. She has a commitment to building bridges in all aspects of her work and teaching.
She is a member of the Board of the Canadian Chapter of the International Association of Women Judges, the Equality and Diversity Committee of the Canadian Association of Provincial Court Judges, and recently retired from the Board of the Alberta Law Reform Institute where her involvement continues as a member of its Communication Committee.
Amongst others, she is Past-Chair of the National Education Committee of the Canadian Association of Provincial Court Judges, a Past-President of Family Mediation Canada and the Alberta Family Mediation Society, and a former Chair of the Canadian Bar Association’s National Alternative Dispute Resolution Section.
Judge Flatters is a recipient of the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal, the Province of Alberta’s Centennial Medal, Family Mediation Canada’s Family Mediation Achievement Award, and the Alberta Family Mediation Society’s John Haynes Memorial Award.
David Turner
A non-status Indian of Saulteaux (Fairford Band, Manitoba) and African American descent, David was an independent consultant with a Diploma of Social Work from Mount Royal College in Calgary. Formerly a Program Consultant for Health Canada’s Aboriginal Head Start Program, David’s experience includes initiatives in health, social services, management, and policy development. David has worked with both urban and First Nations social services programs. Mr. Turner has 20 years experience facilitating complex government contracts and public relations/stakeholder relations with Aboriginal communities across Canada. David’s current role is as Research Coordinator with the University of Calgary, Faculty of Medicine for a program entitled Network Environment for Aboriginal Health Research.
David also served as a Board Member with the Aboriginal Healing Foundation Board of Directors from 2004 – 2010.
